Why VA may request an exam
A compensation and pension (C&P) exam helps VA evaluate whether a disability is connected to service and, if appropriate, its severity. VA may decide some claims from existing records without a separate exam.
How appointments are scheduled
VA or a contractor may send a letter, call, or email. The VA advises confirming the date and location and keeping contact details up to date.
Preparing for the appointment
Review the appointment notice, bring requested identification, and be ready to describe medical history and symptoms accurately, including ordinary functional effects. Do not exaggerate or minimize symptoms.
During and after the exam
The clinician may ask questions, review records, perform examinations, or request tests. A C&P exam is not primarily a treatment appointment. Follow up with VA or the scheduling contractor if an appointment needs to be changed.
DBQs
VA uses condition-specific Disability Benefits Questionnaires to record medical findings. Read the current public DBQ library for available forms and instructions.
Key things to know
- Not every claim requires an in-person exam.
- The clinician may review records, ask questions based on a DBQ, conduct an exam, or arrange tests.
- The exam is an evaluation, not a treatment appointment. Follow the official notice and speak truthfully about your symptoms.
