How VA rates disabilities

VA applies its Schedule for Rating Disabilities under 38 CFR Part 4, which uses diagnostic codes and condition-specific criteria.

Combined ratings

Combined ratings are not the simple arithmetic sum of multiple ratings. VA uses a combined-ratings method and applicable rounding rules.

Condition-specific criteria

An examination may record information such as measurements, symptoms, frequency, test findings, and functional limitations, depending on the disability.

Who decides the rating

VA evaluates the evidence and makes the formal rating decision. This website explains the system but does not predict a rating or advise which condition to claim.

Key things to know

  • Disability ratings are based on applicable law, examination findings, and the record.
  • Combined ratings are not computed by simply adding percentages.
  • Current rating rules are published in 38 CFR Part 4.
